Indonesia’s Raja Ampat islands

Image
Indonesia’s Raja Ampat islands have become one of the most famous places to go diving in all of Asia thanks to the area’s pristine coral reefs and incredible diversity of marine life. In February 2008 I went on the MSY Seahorse’s 11 day diving liveaboard from Raja Ampat to Triton Bay, exploring the amazing underwater world of western Papua. Raja Ampat and Triton Bay Diving: We visited four main areas on the 11 day cruise along western Papua in Indonesia: Raja Ampat’s Kri and Misool islands, Fak Fak and Triton Bay. All of these places are justifiably famous for jawdropping coral reefs and fish life. The Bird’s Head Peninsula of Western Papua (the sticky out bit in which Sorong is located) has been scientifically assessed to have the greatest marine biodiversity in the world. For divers, this means it’s an unparalleled experience in terms of the sheer overwhelming number of marine species you can spot whilst diving. Indeed, scores of new species have been discovered here, some so new th...

Wakatobi National Park

Image
Wakatobi ranks as one of the highest priorities for marine conservation in Indonesia because of the diversity of species, reef condition, and the opportunity to protect such a large network of Marine Protected Areas. Like many of Indonesia’s marine environments, Wakatobi National Park’s diverse coral habitats are threatened by overfishing and destructive fishing practices. What the Conservancy Is Doing We are working to build resilient networks of Marine Protected Areas that are linked by ocean currents and designed to preserve the area’s most important biodiversity by: Conducting scientific surveys of the park’s natural resources Raising awareness of the importance of marine protected areas for sustainable development and biodiversity protection Building the capacity of park rangers and local non-governmental organizations through training in marine protected area management, monitoring and surveillance, sustainable resource use, and spawning aggregation protection.

History of Pinisi ( Traditional Ship Sulawesi)

Image
The Evolution of an Indigenous Wooden Sailing Vessel in Indonesia The "modern" wooden 'Pinisi' type has been derived from similar craft that have been in use in Indonesia for several centuries, according to some sources since prior to the 1500's. The sailing 'Pinisi' hull form in many ways resembles a cross between two traditional American sailing vessel types, the Pinky Schooner and the Tancook Whaler, even though the 'Pinisi' hull type pre-dates those Western hull forms by centuries... In other words, in its original form the 'Pinisi' was a double ended hull type, having sharply raked stem and stern post. There was not a centerline rudder however, as with the American craft. Instead the local Indonesian craft have most often made use of twin rudders, one on each aft quarter. Used both as transport and as cargo vessels, the craft we are calling 'Pinisi' have traditionally been built on the beach, where the logs have come from the f...

The Bunaken National Marine Park was formally established in 1991 and is among the first of Indonesia 's growing system of marine parks.
