Komodo Island

The main attraction of these inhospitable island is their famous resident, the extant Jurassic-like Komodo Dragon, the largest lizard in the world.

In the island-strewn strait between Sumbawa and Flores lies Komodo National Park, home of the world's largest reptile, Varanus komodoensis, the Komodo Dragon. This giant monitor lizard (called ora by the locals) is one of the world's oldest species, a close relative of the dinosaurs that roamed the earth 100 million years ago. The park consists of the islands of Komodo, Rinca (pronounced ren-cha), Padar, Nusa Kode, Motang, numerous smaller islands, the Wae Wuul sanctuary on Flores, and 132,000 hectares (327,000 acres) of the waters surrounding the Komodo group of islands. The park was designated a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site in 1992.

Komodo island lies 500 km (300 miles) east of Bali, and is 30 km (20 miles) long on its north-south axis and 16 km (10 miles) at its widest point. One of the driest areas in all of Indonesia, its forests are covered with scrub brush, gebang (Corypha elata) and acacia trees while drought-resistant lontar palms dot its parched hills

There is only one village on Komodo, a small community of 500 people clinging precariously to the shore. Requested by the government to abandon their inland homes inside the new park boundaries, most of its inhabitants make their living fishing by night from graceful outrigger canoes. There is not much to see in Komodo village except the daily routines of some very poor people. But visitors are welcome, particularly if they are interested in buying one of the locally-carved Komodo Dragon statues (the quality is uneven, so you have to choose carefully), a handful of seed pearls or souvenirs from elsewhere in Indonesia.
